Astute Explores Hamburg Christmas Markets

Following our post about visiting the European Christmas markets this winter, we paid Hamburg a visit for a short, snowy trip to the markets there. 

An early morning flight had us watching the sunrise over the clouds, before touching down with a full day ahead to explore and experience everything that Hamburg has to offer at Christmas. 

The city centre contains several smaller clusters of stalls on the walk to the Rathaus, which is where the main attraction lies. We also managed to pass by the Winterwald, where dense trees and wood chips on the ground create a mini winter forest atmosphere amid the bustle of the city. The stalls here are almost entirely dedicated to food, housing many sweet and savoury german treats alongside some international specialities, such as freshly made paella, pizza and kebabs - including one large wooden hut boasting a log fire which was smoking meats and fish.  

Overlooked by the city hall and a huge Christmas tree, the main market has everything you'd expect from a German experience at this time of year.  You're immediately greeted by large stalls selling Gluehwein - the original and some varieties, accompanied by the aroma of cooking meats further down. Walk in between the huts to find stalls selling all sorts of gifts, from candles and ornaments through to fur goods - you're sure to find a perfect souvenir! All the foods sold here are traditional German, and there is still a huge amount to choose from. We tried out some Bratwurst and Currywurst right before it started to snow, where a hot cup of mulled wine and some pancakes went down perfectly. 

There are a handful of other markets scattered across the city, some of which we did not have the chance to visit. The atmosphere at the central Christmas market outside the Rathaus certainly crowned it as the highlight of the city, and is an absolute must-see. The majority of the markets are open for business until December 23rd, so there's still time to go and experience it for yourself! Christmas Markets by Private Jet

European Christmas markets are world-famous, and rightly so. We're starting to feel festive, so took a look at some of our favourite destinations and the stunning markets they have to offer. 

Imagine being able to fly all the way to Vienna, experience the beauty of their Christmas markets and festive atmosphere over the course of an afternoon and evening, then flying home again - all without the need for an overnight stay. Trdelník (flame-baked cinnamon cake) sounds far too good to miss. 

By private jet, you can fly from London to Prague in under two hours, and the airport sits a mere 20 minute drive from the city centre. Markets run from December 2nd until January 6th, including Christmas eve, Christmas Day and New Year's Day for a magical experience.

Paris

An icon in itself; more than 125 parisian squares and streets are lit up to welcome every single vistor to the French capital over the Christmas period. Indulge in the traditional french wines and cheeses at the foot of the Eiffel Tower whilst browsing the unique Christmas crafts on offer from local vendors. 

A chartered aircraft gets you from London to Paris-Le Bourget (an airport exclusive to private jets, and closer to the city centre than the international airport)  in half the time taken with Eurostar, giving you longer to explore the city and enjoy the festive atmosphere.

Vienna

Originating in 1298, this classic Austrian setting offers a wonderful blend of age-old tradition and culture with the modern day Christmas market. The main market is situated in front of the city hall, which is tranformed in to something from a fairy tale  with thousands of intricate lights; and there are five more large markets located throughout the city for you to explore. 

You can fly to Vienna in as little as two hours from London, which allows you time to see as much of the city as you possibly can, and soak up every last moment of the experience.

Zagreb

You may know of Croatia as a summer holiday destination , but did you know it was voted the best European Christmas market in 2015? The main square is the central attraction, where the large Advent wreath encirlces  the Manduševac Fountain. Traditional wooden cabins can be found a five minute walk away at Zrinjevac, with a more initmate, fairy tale atmosphere serving the Croatian specialities and classic mulled wines. 

A private jet will take you from London to six miles from Zagreb city centre in around two and a half hours. Markets run from December 2nd until January 7th, but Zagreb is best enjoyed before Christmas eve when advent is still being celebrated.

Frankfurt

German Christmas markets are some of the best known globally, and Frankfurt boasts one of the biggest markets in the country for both visitors and size. Five sites are adorned with elaborate deocrations, each offering a unique festive experience to cherish. Take the opportunity to sample all of the classic foods that german markets are renowned for; roasted chestnuts, mulled wine, local beers - and the famous Bratwurst. 

London to Frankfurt takes just 90 minutes by private jet - giving you even less reasons to have to miss out on visiting the stunning city and what it has to offer around Christmas.

Another one? Germany's second largest city has been famous for its food markets for years, and the Christmas markets in Hamburg are no exception. Gluehwein  (traditional german mulled wine) originated in Hamburg for the Christmas markets; the air is filled with the scent of sweet almonds and gingerbread; and local craftspeople exhibit stunning handmade gifts from the beautifully decorated traditional wooden chalets.
